BMW 328i e90 electrical problems - Braden.mancini2828 - 07-11-2025
Hey guys I’m having weird electrical problems with me e90 328i. Randomly one day I just started getting a no start I went through all the normal diagnostics and everything checked out (spark timing fuel compression and voltage all good) after a few more days or trial and error I took it to a mechanic who had told me my valvetronic motor was bad. I took it back home replaced the motor it changed nothing then I replaced the sensor and wiring still nothing changed. I decided to dig deeper so I learned about inpa and how to monitor everything (I’m 16 and new to working on cars in general but especially bmw’s) and quickly learned that my valvetronic was functioning but setting extremely low targets on startup (like 28-35 degrees of lift. Anytime I was able to get it to start it would simply die unless I gave it throttle in which case it would set valvetronic at max lift and then ignore it entirely and this cycle repeated every time I turned the car off. Finally I learned I can set it at max lift and then unplug it to fix the startup problems but this leaves me with error codes and less torque and fuel economy so obviously I want to fix it. Soon after this started I had another issue and this one is intermittent but sometimes after being left off for more than an hour or 2 when I go back in the car all my dash lights turn on and my wipers turn on and it won’t register my foot on the brake so I can’t start and I have to cycle the key a few times in order for it to go away. When it goes away it leaves a bunch of communication related codes in my ecu but doesn’t affect performance afterward
So far I’ve replaced the entire valvetronic if system, run a relearn abc adaptation reset, check my valvetronic relay, and checked my engine and dme grounds as well as my main battery ground.i know that’s not a ton but I’m not sure what else to even do

Check the positive battery cable connection in the glove box behind the fuse assembly. Very common cause for various problems in the vehicle electric system.

Hello
You need to adjust the valvetronic with a diagnostic program. DIS or ISTA.
So for you to understand, the engine works fine, you take it out and put it back in a you need to adjust, if you don't it won't work properly
