HOW TO ENABLE REMOTE ENGINE START (1CR) ON A BMW G22 WITH iDRIVE 8 / SECURE CODING
I thought I'd put this together after successfully enabling Remote Engine Start (RES / option 1CR) on my own car. CAR USED BMW M440i xDrive G22 Production: November 2023 iDrive 8 Pre-LCI S18A platform Remote Engine Start was not factory fitted This car uses Secure Coding / NCD 2.0 on some of the ECUs required for RES, so simply adding 1CR to the FA and VO coding is not enough. This is the complete process that worked for me. -------------------------------------------------- WHAT YOU NEED -------------------------------------------------- - E-Sys - Suitable PSdZData for your vehicle - ENET cable - BimmerUtility or another suitable FDL coding tool - FSC generator capable of generating the RES FSC - A service capable of generating signed NCD 2.0 files - Battery support/charger strongly recommended Make a full backup of your FA, SVT and coding data before changing anything. Everything below is at your own risk. -------------------------------------------------- 1. GENERATE AND INSTALL THE REMOTE START FSC -------------------------------------------------- Remote Engine Start requires an FSC certificate. The relevant FSC application ID is: AppID 380 / 0x17C I generated the FSC using an online BMW FSC generator. Once generated, import the FSC into the car using E-Sys and verify that it has been accepted. Do not continue on the assumption that the FSC has worked. Check its status. -------------------------------------------------- 2. ADD 1CR TO THE VEHICLE ORDER -------------------------------------------------- Connect E-Sys to the car. Read the FA. Save a backup of the original FA. Edit the FA and add: 1CR - Remote Engine Start to the SALAPA Element list. Calculate FP and make sure the modified FA is valid. Save the modified FA. Activate the modified FA. -------------------------------------------------- 3. VO CODE THE RELEVANT ECUs -------------------------------------------------- With the modified FA containing 1CR activated, VO code the relevant ECUs. On my G22 this got most of the car into the correct 1CR configuration, but Remote Engine Start still would not remain enabled. The RES option appeared in iDrive, but switching it on resulted in it reverting back to OFF. This is where Secure Coding becomes important. -------------------------------------------------- 4. CHECK THE REQUIRED FDL PARAMETERS -------------------------------------------------- I also confirmed the relevant RES functions were active in the ECUs that could be accessed normally. On my car the relevant coding included: BDC_BODY3 / BDC: 0x55 - aktiv 0x63 - aktiv 0x6D - aktiv Depending on software/I-Step and vehicle equipment, the ECU names and available parameters may differ. Some modules on newer cars cannot simply be FDL coded because BMW Secure Coding/NCD 2.0 is in use. In my case the important secured ECUs were: DKOMBI8 IHKA5 BimmerUtility reported coding as unavailable for these modules. -------------------------------------------------- 5. GENERATE SIGNED NCD 2.0 FILES -------------------------------------------------- This was the missing step. You need signed NCD 2.0 coding files generated for the vehicle with 1CR included in the FA. I used an online Secure Coding/NCD 2.0 service. The service required: - Modified FA containing 1CR - SVT Actual read from the car The VIN was contained within the FA, so I did not need to enter it separately. The service then generated signed NCD files for the secured ECUs. IMPORTANT: The signed NCD must match the CAFD currently installed in the ECU. For example, on my car: DKOMBI8 CAFD: CAFD_00006D4E_011_001_002 Signed NCD: 00006d4e.caf.011_001_002.ncd IHKA5 CAFD: CAFD_0000A2EE_004_033_000 Signed NCD: 0000a2ee.caf.004_033_000.ncd DO NOT blindly use those filenames on another car. Check the CAFD versions actually fitted to your own vehicle. -------------------------------------------------- 6. WRITE THE SIGNED NCD TO DKOMBI8 -------------------------------------------------- Connect E-Sys normally. Expert Mode -> Coding Read FA. Activate the modified FA containing 1CR. Read ECU / SVT Actual. Find: DKOMBI8 Expand the ECU and locate its CAFD. Confirm that the CAFD exactly corresponds with the signed NCD you received. Right-click the CAFD: New -> NCD Select the signed DKOMBI8 NCD. It will then appear underneath the CAFD in the SVT tree. Select the imported NCD. On the right-hand Coding panel click: CODE NCD IMPORTANT: Use "Code NCD". Do not use normal "Code" on the ECU/CAFD for this operation. Allow the TAL execution to complete. Mine completed with: TAL-Execution finished with status: "Finished" The instrument cluster/control units may restart during coding. -------------------------------------------------- 7. WRITE THE SIGNED NCD TO IHKA5 -------------------------------------------------- Repeat exactly the same process for IHKA5. Find: IHKA5 Expand it and check its CAFD against the signed IHKA5 NCD. Right-click CAFD: New -> NCD Import the matching signed NCD. Select the imported NCD. Click: CODE NCD Again, wait until E-Sys reports: TAL-Execution finished with status: "Finished" Do not interrupt the connection or ignition while this is taking place. -------------------------------------------------- 8. LET THE CAR SLEEP -------------------------------------------------- After both signed NCDs have been successfully written: - Disconnect E-Sys normally - Remove the ENET cable - Switch the car completely off - Get out - Close everything - Lock the car - Leave it untouched for around 10-15 minutes Then unlock and start the car normally. -------------------------------------------------- 9. ENABLE REMOTE ENGINE START -------------------------------------------------- Go into the iDrive climate/pre-conditioning settings. Remote Engine Start should now be available. Enable it. Previously, mine would immediately revert to OFF. After installing the signed DKOMBI8 and IHKA5 NCDs, the setting remained enabled. Remote Engine Start then worked correctly. -------------------------------------------------- THE IMPORTANT BIT -------------------------------------------------- If you have a later G-series BMW using Secure Coding and you have: - Installed the RES FSC - Added 1CR to the FA - VO coded the car - Got the Remote Engine Start menu in iDrive - But the RES switch will not stay ON then repeatedly changing ordinary FDL parameters may not solve it. On my car the missing part was the signed NCD 2.0 coding for: DKOMBI8 IHKA5 Once those two signed NCDs were written using E-Sys -> Code NCD, RES worked. -------------------------------------------------- USEFUL SEARCH TERMS -------------------------------------------------- For the FSC generator, search for: BMW FSC generator AppID 380 1CR remote engine start For the signed coding files, search for: BMW Secure Coding signed NCD 2.0 or: BMW NCD 2.0 modified FA SVT There are services that will generate the signed files from your modified FA and SVT Actual. -------------------------------------------------- FINAL WARNING -------------------------------------------------- This is what worked on my specific G22 M440i running iDrive 8. BMW software versions, CAFDs, ECUs and Secure Coding implementation vary between cars. Do not copy my CAFD/NCD versions to another vehicle. Read the actual vehicle first, make backups, confirm the FSC is accepted, and make sure every signed NCD exactly matches the relevant CAFD before using Code NCD.
