Ista error messages help please

I have plugged in ISTA D with a D can cable to my E46

Made a change to the edibas.ini to STD:OBD

Changed ista settings to edibas.ini 

When I tried to read the car had the following errors

The vehicle identification number could not be identified. Please enter the 7 or 17 digit number to continue 

I entered the chassis number and it failed 

Next error 
 The programming system could not be initialised. The ista installation might be damaged 


Any ideas

Are you using the 20-pin connector in the engine bay or the DLC under the dash?

A D can cable under the dash. 

It does read out but does keep telling me ISTA needs reinstalling as might be damaged

What model year is your E46?
